Sorry for the amount of reading, but I'm trying to squeeze this book in and missing Friday set us back a bit. Feel free to read online or use Overdrive or Libravox to read and get caught up.

December 11, 2017

Nice to see everyone back and safe and if you missed today because of the fire situation, I'll do my best to work with you and get you caught up. Check out the slides and please do 4  two-line qpecs on ch. 5 (3 qpecs on 4 and 5 if you are in per 7 or 8)

December 7, 2017

Today doesn't really matter too much because of what's going on with the fires. I hope all of you guys are safe. We'll pick up where we left off on Monday.

December 6, 2017

Today we did some notes on Nietzche (KNEECH - Kuh) and did a qpec presentation. We'll finish that tomorrow. Make sure TDQs are turned in online.

December 5, 2017

We read Most of Chapter 3 today. Do 4 qpecs by tomorrow for stamp.

December 4, 2017

Today we stamped QPECS for ch. 2, looked at a google maps picture of the trail used in CotW and did our TDQs for ch. 2. These are due tomorrow and if you get less than 3 out of 4 then you can't work in a group next time.

We'll read Ch. 3 and look at QPECs tomorrow.

Today we worked on our graphic organizers for the ee cummings poem "l(a)" or "One." Here are some samples. \\

See notes and have all stamps for stamp quiz tomorrow. Will try to get pic up asap.

November 27, 2017

Today we looked at TDQs from “Skin” and looked at ee cummings’ poem “One” (it really has no title. Our job was to come up with a thesis statement that will set up an expository essay. The real trick is to not simple give out a bunch of information.

Also have a look at the Yale Open Enrollment program. If nothing else, it’s a great peek into what a college classroom is like.

November 16-17

Today we worked on the Benchmarks. I know these are stressful but they're an important part of what we do here at OUSD and throughout the state and country. I linked the 3rd book plug if you want to start early on that. Read at least 25 minutes per day and have a nice break.

November 15, 2017

I put a better link on google classroom because the other one is so small.

Today we went over the TDQs and talked about The Banksy Dilemma which is what happens when you have valuable art that would be devalued if sold (this has happened a few times). We also read "Skin" by Roald Dahl and watched what happened to our protagonist when confronted with a similar dilemma.

TDQs due for homework.

Checkout Exit Through the Gift Shop on Netflix.

Today we reviewed some of our essays and also took some note on Direct and Indirect Characterization.

November 9, 2017

Today we reviewed BPWSTA, looked at the annotations from LttS and watched the Alfred Hitchcock version of LttS. No homework but if you want to watch an Alfred Hitchock movie, these are generally considered his best:

The Birds

North By Northwest

Rear Window

Dial M. For Murder is also one of my favorites.

November 8, 2017

Today we talked about Coordinating conjunctions, saw a brainpop, took some notes, did some NoRedInk and annotated Lamb to the Slaughter.

Annotations and NRI is due tomorrow.

We talked a little about Led Zeppelin songs, and it's truly heartbreaking that so many of you only know "Stairway to Heaven" and "The Immigrant Song." Please spotify Led Zeppelin IV or Houses of the Holy. Or the live version of "Dazed and Confused." Or get the box set.

November 7, 2017

Today we looked in at our annotations, took a stamp quiz, took a punctuation quiz and also read "Lamb to the Slaughter." TDQs due tomorrow (choose 5).

Here is the story itself if you can't google it.

November 1, 2017

Today we looked at some essays and started peer review. Tomorrow at 7:15 is the deadline for the essays, no exceptions.

October 31, 2017

Today we typed up our essays. Tomorrow, we will do a massive critique and revision. It's Very important that you have an essay to critique. Make sure it's all typed up and ready to go. Otherwise, it's very hard to get feedback.

October 30, 2017

Today we looked a our intros and wrote some conclusions for homework.

October 27, 2017

Today we talked about intros. See powerpoint. Also reviewed test. Will probably adjust these grade because of some issues with answers but will let people know Monday. I took those points off for 32, 34,and 36. It shouldn't hurt anyone's grade and it will help most

October 26, 2017

Today we had our LOTF Test and finished up some projects like Book Plugs and also the Storyboard slide show.

October 25,. 2017

October 13, 2017

Today we QPECed 11, did BPWSTA and played Kahoot and worked on Ch. 11 TDQs (on homework calendar if you need them)

October 12, 2017

Today we looked at our Storyboards and also read chapter 11. Do Qpecs (7) for tomorrow.

October 11, 2017

Today we finished up our storyboards and reviewed the TDQs for Ch. 10.

Please have those storyboards finished by tomorrow.

Check spelling, names, format, etc.

October 10, 2017

Today we worked on our Storyboards for LotF. Here are a few pointers:

Save. You have to save these (not like google docs, you have to press save. Also, save them under the assignment "Scene from Lord of the Flies"

Change the hair and skin colors.

If you are working with a partner, decide who does what. Make your own slides. Then you can have one person share or save their picture, send it to the other person, and the other person can add it to their project.

Do not be silly. If you have these guys wearing silly clothes (like space suits or football gear), reduce a significant amount of points.

Copy and paste slides. That way you don't have to redraw everything.

We'll finish these up tomorrow.

October 9, 2017

No homework. Today we finished Ch. 10 and QPECed it. Tomorrow we'll do the TDQs in groups on chromebooks.

October 6, 2017

Today we talked about Books People Can't Stop Talking About (see list on the left) and we did old fashioned TDQs in our notebooks. We also took the notebook/planner quiz. We'll review Vocab Quiz on Monday. QPECs for the first half of chapter 10 due Monday and also please do at least one TDQ in notebooks for stamp. See homework calendar for the actual TDQs if you were absent.

October 5, 2017

Today we QPEC SLDed chapter 9 and took a vocab test. Will post asap. Thursdays are always busty. No TDQs today, we'll do them tomorrow in class and also start Ch. 10 and do a Stamp/Planner quiz.

October 4, 2017

Today we watched a few minutes of 180 Degrees South and reflected on the mistakes made by the Easter Islanders and how their mistakes are similar to those of the boys on LotF. You should read Collapse by Jared Diamond for more info.

Homework is QPEC for Ch. 9.

October 3, 2017

Today we did our TDQs on Ch. 8 and finished presentations.

October 2, 2017

Today we finished chapter 8 and had a student led instruction on our QPEs. Great job Canaan, Mali, and Sabrya! No homework other that quizlet screenshot. Come in before/after school if you need to use a chromeboook.

September 29, 2017

Today we read most of chapter 8, which is a huge turning point in the story as the division between Ralph and Jack becomes physical and we actually see the Lord of the Flies and, somehow, it communicates with Simon. Do your Quizlet practice quiz and 4 QPECs for Monday on Chaper 8 in notebook. Have a great weekend.

September 28, 2017

Sorry for the late post. Today was a fun day; we did our first QPEC student led discussion. Good job Miki, Wiki, and Sarah. We also started our TDQs for Chapter 7 and tomorrow we'll read chapter 8 and all heck breaks loose in LotF. We'll even learn what the title means and get to what is essentially the turning point (not the climax) of the book. It will be fun we'll also quizlet a bit to review.

September 27, 2017

Today we reviewed some of the Symbols in Lord of the Flies and read most of Chapter 7. Homework is to write 5 good, two to three line TDQs based on what we've read.

September 26, 2017

Today we finished Chapter 6 and talked about Castle Rock, Jack's obsession with it, Ralph's dislike of it, and Simon's incredulity (disbelief) of the beast. The events in Chapter 6 sort of change the course of the remainder of the book and the Map (which is in the Slides Presentation) is a big part of the climax and resolution.

TDQs for Ch. 6 due tomorrow. I'll post grades from Ch. 5 TDQs today (hopefully) and try to get the rest of the grades updated. I should point out that I can't take any late work from the first six weeks, so focus on the now.

September 25, 2017

Okay, today we read chapter 6 in all classes but we didn't finish it in 2 and 7 so we'll have to play catch up tomorrow. Homework is to do QPECs for chapter 6 (5 of them) even if we didn't finish. You should be able to come up with something. Also, the powerpoint has some good maps on it as does the game below. I would study Quizlet terms first, however.

Here is the game I was talking about.

September 22, 2017

Sorry for the late post. This was a very busy week. A few things about today: we took our planner/stamp quiz, but I realized that I didn't put in an option for "No Stamp" so anyone who didn't get a stamp would get the same credit as anyone who got a late stamp and that's completely unfair. So, long story short, we'll have to do that test again on Monday.

I also put in grades and did my best to update grades. Many of you got A+s. Great. You guys are awesome. Some of you guys didn't get A+s. Great. There's room for improvement. I think the people who got A+s will tell you that there's not a great deal of homework and we've never really had any difficult tests or huge assignments. It's really just a matter of work habits.

I put in as many comments as I could on the report cards and I think the grades are pretty fair over all. If you've ever tried to run a marathon and, after a mile or so, just started walking and texting and talking to people for an hour and then tried to start running again with the hope of winning the marathon, you'll know one thing: you're not going to win that marathon and you will spend the rest of the afternoon in complete misery if you even want to finish in a decent time. This is how life works. The good news is that we've still got a ways to go and most of you are in decent shape and can still win this thing and if you've read this far, I'm sure you're one of those people.

September 21, 2017

Sorry for the late post. Today we looked at some Thomas Hobbes quotes about the nature of man. All of these quote indicate that mankind is not very civilized and these ideas were a big part of Lord of the Flies. We also read chapter 5 and did our TDQs. Tomorrow we'll do our book plugs. Please make sure any late work is turned in.

September 20, 2017

Today we looked at our TDQs from chapter 4 and also read half of chapter 5. QPECs for the first part of chapter five are due tomorrow in notebook. Also probably a stamp check. Also, you should look at the new words on Quizlet as there could be a pop quiz on Friday.

Back to School Night!
Here is the Sign-in Sheet

Here is the Slides Show

September 19, 2017

Today we reviewed a new tardy policy (be in the class when the bell rings and be moving towards your seat) we also finished chapter 4 and reviewed a new TDQ policy: 3 sentences: Answer - concrete detail - commentary (see example from google classroom handout).

Be sure to have homework turned in by tomorrow on Google classroom.

Hopefully I will see all of your parents tonight.

September 18, 2017

Today we read the first half of Lord of the Flies and looked at the TDQs from Chapter 3. Back to School Night is tomorrow and I want to see ALL your parents. Please come and also book plugs are due Friday.

September 15, 2017

Today we reviewed our QPECs for Chapter 3 and also did our TDQs for chapter 3. We also tried out Quizlet live which was a lot of fun. Study your vocabulary on Quizlet and be sure to remind your parents about Back To School Night.

Here is a link to the Corpse Flower story (which we learned about in 4th period).

September 14, 2017

Today we reviewed the QPECs and the TDQs and read ch. 3 of LotF (mostly). Homework is the QPECs which should be done in your notebook for a stamp. Be sure to have 5

September 13, 2017

Today we got caught up on our  NEWSEla presentations and also worked on TDQs and Qpecs for Chapter 2 of LotF.

Please have those things turned in by tomorrow or email if you have any problems or questions.

September 12, 2017

Today we learned some new quizlet terms and took our NoRedInk test. We also finished reading Chapter 2 of Lord of the Flies. Will work on  presentations and TDQs tomorrow.

September 11, 2017

Today we read the first half of chapter 2 of Lord of the Flies and went over the TDQs from Friday. I'll have the grades in as soon as possible.

September 8

Today we finished chapter 1 on LotF and worked on the TDQs for that chapter in groups. These TDQs are due Monday so make sure things are finished and turned in by then and that everyone works equally.

September 7

Today we read up to about page 24 in Lord of the Flies and also took our planner/notebook quiz on google classroom.

September 6

Today we learned about Dystopias and Utopias and Allegories. We also started reading Lord of the Flies and looked at some new vocabulary. We also reviewed possessives and plurals on NoRedInk. Make sure to have this done by tomorrow. Also: have your planner up to date for a planner/stamp quiz!

September 5

Today we took and stamped notes on William Golding and worked on singular possessives. We did presentations as well.

September 1, 2017

Today we reviewed the NoRedInk test and presented our current events and heard from Gary who did a nice job on his presentation. It's important to remember to use words like "possessive" and "adverb" and "contraction" when looking at homophones like its and it's and there their and they're.

Have a great weekend.

August 31, 2017

Today we talked about TDQs for "Broken Chain" and finished up our presentation worksheets. We also talked about our extension project on Google Sites.

August 30, 2017

Today we did some notes on Their/They're/There and went over the NewsELA digital worksheet which is due Friday.

August 29, 2017

[I had my dates off a bit this week but I fixed it]

Today we watched a short film about Alex Gray's 2010 wipeout at Todos Santos and plugged the major plot points into a narrative. You can youtube a lot of these movies at home. They all follow the same pattern. We stamped our notes and worked on NoRedInk. All you need to know is this: it's = it is.

It's easy.

August 28, 2017

Today we learned how to add a link to a google document and then practiced by adding links to book plugs and then to our sign up sheet for News ELA stories. We'll talk more tomorrow about exactly what we will need to do for the News ELA stories, but it's important you read, understand, and make yourself familiar with the stories. Start by annotating them carefully and adding notes. We will begin presenting next week hopefully and I'll approve them tomorrow during class.

August 25, 2017

Today was a fun Friday in the sense that we got to check out our A.R. Scores and compare how our books stack up to what we should be reading. We also read "A Boy Named Sue" by Shel Silverstein and annotated the poem in the hope of finding the various plot points (exposition, climax, etc.) It should be fairly easy to annotate; that's your only homework and most of you did it (you can do it on a phone I think).

The books that were plugged in class were:

Holding up the Universe

Dead End in Norvelt

Everything, Everything

Go Ask Alice

Needful Things

Darius and Twig

Museum of Thieves

Check them out on and see if they're in your zone...

I can't believe no one knows the song "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin. Shame on all of you.

August 24, 2017

Today we talked about Plot Structure and made some notes and studied Quizlet a bit.

August 23, 2017

Today we took the A.R. test today and also went to the library. I will have those scores for you to take home by the 25th or I can email them to you if you contact me (I don't like to print things).

August 22, 2017

New Quizlet words are up. You should study the Point of View Words in your notes.

Today we read "Broken Chain" by Gary Soto and answered questions 2-5 on page 16 in our textbooks (due tomorrow)

I also updated grades so look on Aeries.

August 21, 2017

Today we took a few notes of Point of View. You guys should know the five types (or at least have them written in your notebooks). The notes are on my website and I'll have some Quizlet terms up and shared by 4:00 p.m. today. I'll also try to update grades by today as well.

If you did badly on the NoRedInk quiz on Adverbs, you can come in and retake it at lunch (if you got less that 70 percent). If you got between 70 and 80 you have the option of retaking it and I'll keep the highest grade. Study first, though.

August 18, 2017

Okay, we just finished the first week. Everything went great and I'm really happy with the three groups of student I have this year; I really lucked out and I'm excited for what's ahead.

Finish up those annotations over the weekend if you didn't finish in class and feel free to email if you have any questions or technical problems.

Have a great weekend!

Here is the eclipse website I showed you in class.

August 17, 2017

Updated 2:50 p.m.

Today we did our first digital annotations. You should have two pages of annotations done by today and we'll finish the rest tomorrow. NoRedInk Adverbs will be due tomorrow as well. I'll try to squeeze in some games and also talk about our books and learn a few new terms.

August 16, 2017

Updated August 16, 2017 at 2:56 p.m.

Today was a very busy day. We read Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" and also got the chrome books for the first time. We were supposed to bookmark and log into a bunch of sites. For example, no red ink, google classroom, quizlet, NewsEla. The reason I like to do this all at once is so we can develop a routine where students who finish work early can use the other websites and spend their time doing things that are beneficial to them and their interests. Tomorrow we'll have an actual assignment that gets graded.

Be sure to bring books, planners and supplies and syllabus tomorrow.

August 15, 2017

Here is today's Slides Presentation. We took a few notes on Adverbs/Adjectives and made some name tags for them. We can finish these up tomorrow. We will also get into the chromebooks a bit tomorrow. Look for books to bring to class. I'll try to get us in the Library before the end of the week, but between my library and the Internet, you should be able to find something interesting  to get started on.

Updated August 14, 2017 3:04 p.m.

Today was a great first day and it was nice meeting everyone. I'm really working hard to memorize people's names right away so that's my homework. If you're reading this and bookmarking this page, you've done all you really need to do today. Other things are due later this week (see Calendar).

Get supplies

Find independent reading books.

Sign (or digitally sign) syllabus. I'll update again later.

I updated grades and gave everyone one point in each category just everyone has something to work with. The 1 point you have will eventually become insignificant, but until then everyone has an A+.

Important: When you join quizlet, it’s a good idea to use something with your actual name in it so I can tell if you’ve actually been studying. If it’s a weird nickname, it’s hard to tell (but I realize a lot of usernames are already taken)

August 14, 2017 Slides Presentation

The link above will take you to today's Slides presentation. I will have these posted on a daily basis.

Updated August 13, 2017, 1:23

Okay, I'm getting things ready for tomorrow, but something always goes wrong so I apologize in advance if I mess up anyone's names. If you want to have a look at google classroom or quizlet, I'm putting the codes for each class on this page.  There is already a digital syllabus that you can turn in if you don't want to use paper and I'll have some quizlet items up by tomorrow.

If you hate your yearbook picture, you might want to have a better picture we can use for class and you can airdrop or email it to me.  I'm going to try to learn everyone's names very fast and I need pictures to do that.

Also, if you don't like your first name and want to be called something else, let me know ASAP.

Tomorrow should be fun and not too overwhelming or awkward. See you in E-2!

Updated August 6, 2017 12:12 p.m.

Hello and welcome to Mr. Chrisman's class. Most of you just got your schedules and want to see if there's any information about your new teachers. If you're this type of person, we're already off to a great start. I like research and I respect people who use technology to satisfy curiosity. Feel free to send me an email to say hello and that you saw the website and if you have any questions I'll be happy to answer them.

About the boy in the picture. This is my son Benno and he's five years old. Since I've been teaching at MLK, I've been including at least one picture of him in every lesson. He's always around and he likes to have his picture taken, but if you have other pictures of you want me to use I'm open to suggestions.

About me: This is my third year at King Middle School and my second year teaching 8th Grade Language Arts at King (I taught 8th Grade U.S. History in '15-'16 and have taught 9th and 10th grade Language Arts previously). I've been teaching for 15 years in total and have lived in South Korea and Germany. I like surfing, golf, travel and reading.

About this class: In my opinion, this class is relatively easy if you put forth some effort. All of the handouts, assignments, and projects are digital, so you really don't have to worry about losing a piece of paper or forgetting to write something down. That being said, there are a few things that require paper, specifically your dedicated (just for this class) college ruled spiral notebook and a King Middle School Planner. You have to bring these every day. You will also need at least three pens and three pencils and at three highlighters (yellow, pink, and blue).

All the homework is posted on the website by 4:00 p.m. the day before it is due (usually earlier). I answer all emails that are in my inbox before 9 p.m.

Is this class hard?

Last year, I had a number of students get more than 100 percent in the class. I asked them how much homework they did on average. The answer: about 15 minutes.

Also last year, I had a number of students get less than 50 percent in the class. I asked them how much homework they did on average. The answer: I don't do homework.

If you want to look at last year's website, you can follow this link. I will change quite a few assignments and many of the google docs are restricted, but if you have some time to kill and want to see what we did last year, have fun.

May 9, 2017

Today we talked about Utopias and Dystopias. The Island is - at this point - a Utopia: no adults, ample supplies, good weather, swimming, etc.

We also read the second half of chapter one and noticed how the boys have inherited some war making characteristics. Ralph acts like a fighter plane after insulting Piggy; the trio of Ralph, Jack, and Simon dislodge a rock that they describe as being like a bomb.

Finish TDQs from Chapter 1 tonight. We’ll do character maps tomorrow and also Kahoot.

May 8, 2017

Today we started Lord of the Flies. The vocabulary is on Quizlet and the TDQs will always be on the left side of this website (you have to scroll to Lord of the Flies). April 26, 2017

Today we reviewed our handout from “And Still I Rise” and read “Casey at the Bat” which is an example of a ballad. An epic is the same type of poem, but includes many more stories of the hero. An example would be “Beowulf” or “The Odyssey.”
April 25, 2017

Today we took our Poetry Terms quiz and read Maya Angelou’s “And Still I Rise.” Homework is to annotate and answer questions in notebook for stamps. We also watched a Brainpop biography and a video of her reading the poem. Check out her website for more info.

April 18, 2017

Today we finished our essays and learned a bit about Germany in period 4. I’ll be grading these essays basically in order of file size and it will take a while so be patient because I have some German visitors I need to show around. Tomorrow we’ll start a mini unit on Poetry. SBAC testing will start in the early part of May, then Lord of the Flies, then summer, high school, college, marriage, children, old age, death, reincarnation, then - most likely - eighth grade again.

April 17, 2017

Today we started typing up our essays. We will finish this tomorrow. Make sure you have a rough draft ready to type tomorrow or else I can't give you a chromebook.

Spring Break

Many, many of you are not getting points on your bookplugs because of sharing permissions or bad links. I will give everyone a couple of days to fix the links, but on Wednesday afternoon I'm going to go ahead and submit final grades.

Here is how to make link on the bookplugs spreadsheet (which is to the left of the screen you are now loooking at.)

Friday, April, 6 2017

Today we finished our argument essays. You should have a rough draft to type up when we come back. I’ll be grading the book plugs this week so there will be some grade fluctuation. It’s probably a good idea to double check and make sure the links all work on the spreadsheet (which is located on this page, to the left).

Have a great, safe break!

Thursday, April 6, 2017

Today we worked on our argument essays., Rough drafts should be in by tomorrow.

Wednesday, April 5, 2017

Click Advanced.

Click “Anyone at OUSD who has the link can access”

You can also go to File: Share and type in

If you have questions, please email. I will be grading these tomorrow and if I can’t click the link and access them, I cannot grade them.

Tuesday April 4, 2017

Today we started our Argument essays on Killer Whales in Captivity. We read two articles. Your homework is to annotate the first article that we got in class. Will stamp this tomorrow and will try to post video and article notes, but most of this will be on old timey paper.

Tuesday, March 28, 2017

Today we looked at some projects and worked in groups to get our presentations ready. Be Ready by tomorrow. We also looked at a book tree. I think we should make these and have them ready by the end of next week.

 Monday, March 27, 2017

Today we cleaned up the signup sheet for our projects and took some notes on Appositives. Sometimes you need commas, other times you don't. Notes are in slides show and need to be stamped. We also worked on our projects. If you want to get an A, try making a single frame storyboard. Also, think bulletpoints, not text. Homework is to review vocab and work on project which are due Wednesday.

Friday, March 24, 2017

Today we talked about college (see slides) and also got moving on our projects. Everyone should have a story or poem by now. We will start presenting on Friday. You should be working over the weekend and making your presentations as insightful and informative as possible.

If you want to do a Podcast, it's fairly simple. Just make a slides presentation, but instead of presenting the slides presentation, just watch the presentation and talk about what is on the slides. Use it like an organizer. But make the podcast insightful and spontaneous. Become fluent in the story/poem and talk about it in a way that's natural (I know it's a challenge, but challenges are what make us better.)

Thursday, March 23, 2017

Today we went over the TDQs from Pit and the Pendulum and also got started on our group projects. Those of you who aren't in a group will have to earn your right to form a group by actually selecting and reading a story. We will start presenting on Wednesday so it's important that you Actually Read and understand the story. I expect everyone to struggle to some extent-- after all it's Poe -- but the effort will be worth it.

Tuesday, March 21, 2017

Today we read and in some classes watched "Pit and the Pendulum." I'll be out tomorrow but will have detailed instructions. Be good and respectful!

Thursday March 16, 2017

Today we worked on our graphic organizers. They need to be turned in by tomorrow on google classroom. You don't have to do the Effectiveness of Claim part just yet (it will be due on Monday in your journal).

Wednesday, March 15, 2017

Today we reviewed the TDQs for "Cask of Amontillado" and began comparing articles on Poe's death. The first step is annotation. make sure you have between 30 and 40 annotations (highlighted terms, names, notes, definitions) and that you turn it in on Google classroom (!) We can work on the graphic organizer tomorrow (but if you want to work ahead you can).

PARENTS If you have a child in my class, the odds are fairly good that your child is not turning homework in regularly. As the year begins to wind down, missing homework assignments start to add up. I have found that students who cannot get homework in regularly have a much harder time juggling late assignments. Moreover, it is important that students get homework in on a daily basis and not simply beg for leniency. Let's get our homework in every single day.

Tuesday March 14, 2017

Here is a video on pi. I think this is fascinating. Watch it to the end and I'll give bonus points (there will be questions). We also took our vocab test and did our TDQs for "Amontillado." IMPORTANT: Take a make up test at lunch if you don't like your grade. Study. Then test. Many didn't study and there were some low grades.

Homework: finish TDQs on Amontillado.

Monday, March 13

Today we read "The Cask of Amontillado" and learned some new vocabulary words. There will be a quiz tomorrow on starred vocab words so please study.

Friday, March 10, 2017

Today I stamped the Symbols from Masque of the Red Death (but forgot in 7th 8th?) and looked at Meter (in quizlet). The meter is the patter of stressed and unstressed syllables in poetry. We saw a brainpop on it. We also read Annabell Lee and noticed the meter of the last few stanza. We also looked at Sonnet 130 and saw the meter and rhyme scheme of Shakespearean Sonnets. It's also a funny sonnet .

We also did NoRedInk for plural possessives which should be a review for most of us. Homework is the Annabell Lee TDQs as well as NoRedInk if you didn't finish in class.

Thursday, March 9, 2017

Today we read The Masque of the Red Death and discussed the symbols (see linked Slides presentation) Those need to be in your notebook for a stamp. We also talked about the vocab from the story. We'll get into it a bit more tomorrow. HW is TDQs from MotRD.

Thursday February 16, 2017

Today we took the benchmark. If you were absent, go to the library for first. If you didn't finish in 8th, go to the library tomorrow during first period. We will have a guest teacher and watch To Kill a Mockingbird. If you have any gradebook questions, I made a sheet that I will use to check any issues.

Be Good tomorrow and have a great break.

Wednesday February 15, 2017

Today we finished To Kill a Mockingbird and watched the Sparknotes video on it. Then we did TDQs and any last minute items that are due no later than tomorrow. I will do my best to get everything up to date tomorrow gradebook wise. If you really want help tomorrow, memorize this quote: "a lack of planning on your part doesn't constitute an emergency on mine." If you have that quote memorized, I will be delighted to help you in any way I can. Because you went to the website and actually took the time to read about what we did. Please, don't tell anyone else. I want to help Y-o-u.

We also did our peer reviews which are due tomorrow (I know they were technically due today so don't worry if it says Late on google classroom.) We also looked at the Storyboardthat assignments. Some of you have never actually joined my class. Use the code from google classroom (it's down there in the stream) and join. Then Save and select TKAM Scene a book. Once you do this, update your the google document from today's lesson so I actually know you've finished. Many, many of you haven't done this yet.

Friday, February 10, 2017

Today we read chapter 25 and 26 in TKaM and typed up our Schaeffer Paragraphs. We also did a planner quiz and turned in the Storyboards. I forgot to stamp Period 3, so we'll do that on Monday (someone remind me).

Have a good weekend and get your work in. I will be submitting grades at the end of next week.

Thursday, February 9, 2017

TDQ 20 2.8
Comparing Novels 1.30

Monday, February 6, 2017

Today we finished chapter 18 and I peeked in on some of the annotations from the digital handout on Google Classroom. We also did the TDQs and looked at the Storyboards. Computers are sort of scarce this upcoming week so we'll have to do a lot of reading in class, but that's to be expected.

I've been grading your book plugs and many of you have bad links, short subjective/objective reviews or nothing at all. This is harmful to your grade, so please have those done ASAP.

Friday, February 3, 2017

Today we read chapter 17 in TKAM and noticed the way Harper Lee describes Mr. Ewell like a rooster. It's very consistent and maintains the motif of birds. We did our TDQs online and also looked at a few paragraphs which we annotated (we will finish this on Monday) but it's not homework.

Thursday , February 2, 2017

Today we read chapter 16 and learned about the people that come to town for the trial and how the architecture of the courthouse sort of matches the attitudes of the South. This is Harper Lee's way of making a comment on society without saying it directly. We will annotate the paragraph from the slides show tomorrow. Work on storyboards and TDQs for Ch. 16 for homework.

Wednesday, February 1, 2017

Sorry for the late post. Today we started our project but it's not due until next week (we had an assembly so we got a head start.) Tomorrow we'll read Ch. 16 and do TDQs. Probably No Vocab quiz because we don't have the Chromebooks, but the TDQs from 15 AND the character map are due.

Tuesday, January 31, 2017

Today we read Chapter 14 and most of 15 and did our TDQs. We also watched a short video about Emmett Till. Feel free to research this story on your own. The key reason for watching this is that this story - as tragic as it was - probably made an impact on Harper Lee (remember the TKaM was published in 1960 and this took place in 1954). This event also woke people up to the horrific race relations in the deep south. I know it's a grim video, but that grimness woke America up to a problem eventually resulted in the Civil Rights Movement.

For homework, finish the TDQs and the Subjective Analysis (on google documents). Make sure you do it. Lots of people are having problems getting homework finished. It's a very small amount of work.

Monday, January 30, 2017

Today we did TDQs  individually and also put our Subjective Reviews onto a shared document. We'll look at them tomorrow. Tonight, make sure yours are up there. Come in before school, lunch, etc. We also did TDQs for Chapter 13 and read Chapter 14 (almost finished). Will finish tomorrow.

Friday, January 27, 2017

Today we reflected on the narrative structure of The Outsiders and TKaM. At this point, most people are wondering where this book is going; why did Harper Lee abandon the story about Boo and move into Tom Robinson. It seems weird, but there is a reason for this that is explained later and it's worth staying with it if for no other reason than the vocabulary.

We also read Chapter 12 and learned why the trial will be so difficult for everyone. Your homework is in the linked powerpoint and I will stamp it on Monday. If you were out, get it done, if not, it's late.

Have a great weekend.

Thursday, January 26, 2017

Today we took our character/plot quiz on TKaM  and also read part of Chapter 12. We also Kahooted to practice and review the first part of the book. If you were out for a field trip, come by at lunch and you'll take a different test. It's short and easy and (as I've said in class) St8 out of Quizlet.

Wednesday, January 25, 2017

Today we finished part one (almost) in all the classes and had a Vocabulary Quiz on Vocabulary words 35-68 in Quizlet. If you missed it, you can take it at lunch but it will be a different quiz. I'll put the grades up ASAP but it probably won't be until tomorrow. Speaking of tomorrow, we will have a short character quiz so study the maps. We'll also have a few easy questions on the plot, so if you're paying attention, you'll probably be okay. For example, Who does Scout fight at Finch's landing? What do they get for Xmas? What month do they shoot Tim Johnson. That type of stuff. Focus on characters.

Tuesday, January 24, 2017

Today we worked on our TDQs from Chapter 8 and 9, updated our character maps and brainstormed what the title To Kill a Mockingbird was about. Then we found out. Chapter 10 is very important in establishing Atticus as a powerful character and conveys the overall theme of the novel.  Vocab Quiz tomorrow!

Monday, January 23, 2017

Today we caught up on our reading from chapter 8 and 9 and updated our character maps. We will do the TDQs in class tomorrow and continue to review our avatar pages. Make sure those and in and that you have 20 characters on your character map (see quizlet characters to double check if you have them.)

Friday, January 20, 2017

Today we did our TDQs from chapter 7 and finished our Avatar projects. If you didn't finish yours, I put a zero in the gradebook but I will give you up to 70 points for having it turned in late. You can add it to the slide show on Monday or over the weekend. These were due today and I tried to make that as clear as possible yesterday. We got about halfway through chapter 8 in TKaM and will finish first thing Monday. Have a great weekend and study new vocab words on Quizlet.

Thursday, January 19, 2017

Today we did our TDQs for Chapter 6 and started reading chapter 7. We also started a avatar project on google classroom. Make sure you guys do the homework which is to find 10 concrete details about your character. We can use the chromebooks tomorrow to get his turned in, but most of the work should be done in advance.

Wednesday January 18, 2017

Today we did our TDQs for chapter 5 and had a test on our stamps. Make sure you get that turned in. They are on Aeries. Also, we will have a Planner test tomorrow.

Tuesday, January 17, 2017

Today we finished Chapter 4 and worked on the TDQs (which are linked to the left). I'll stamp those tomorrow. We also had our vocabulary test. We'll also read Chapter 5. We also did a Kahoot on some of the basic information. If you're getting any questions wrong, you should be reviewing the book or at the very least the Sparknotes. I also updated quizlet vocabulary and characters.

Friday, January 13, 2017

Today we will review the vocabulary terms from Chapters 1-3, update our character maps, and try using chrome books to collaborate on our TDQs. Afterwards, we will finish chapter 4 and try to figure our what's happening in the Finch's neighborhood.

Because of the Pep Rally, I decided to postpone the Vocabulary Quiz until Tuesday. Just chapter 3 words from Quizlet (the first 30 words) but the quiz will only have 8 words (I'm not telling which one.)

Have a great weekend and Happy Birthday to Dr. Martin Luther King.

Thursday, January 12, 2017

Today we will have a quick quiz on character, work on Chapter 2 TDQs, read Chapter 3  and watch a short part of President Obama's speech that references Atticus Finch.

Wednesday, January 11, 2017

Today the plan is to review chapter one by answering text-dependent questions and discuss our answers in groups. Then we will learn some new vocabulary for the upcoming chapter and update our character maps.

Tuesday, January 10, 2017

Today we will review some facts about To Kill a Mockingbird, preview 11 vocabulary words from Quizlet and start talking about some of the main characters. Character maps will be due tomorrow and must be in class every day. Be ready for some TDQs tomorrow.

Monday, January 9, 2017

Today is our first day back. I will actually link the Slides presentation to each of these entries. That way you can see any notes you may have missed. I'll try to keep linking the screenshots of the slide show, but that tends to get clunky after a while.

If you're new or missed this information the first time, one great way to be successful is to email when you have questions. If you don't have a computer, find a friend who has a computer and have them email. If the rare chance that I don't answer your email, you can always say you tried to contact me.

Let's have a great year. "Get smart and have fun" on three. 1...2...3

That was lame.

UPDATE: If you want, submit a screenshot from Google Streetview of the weird house. Just google the address and navigate until you find the house.
